Frequently Asked Questions

Before You Reach Out

Choosing the right kind of relationship support can feel like a significant decision—especially when your relationship is already under strain. These answers will help you understand how Beyond the Argument works, which program may be the best fit, and what to expect after you contact us.

If you are still uncertain, that is completely understandable. You do not need to diagnose the problem or select the perfect program before reaching out. We can discuss what you are facing and help you identify the most appropriate next step.

What is Beyond the Argument?

Beyond the Argument is a science-informed, psychologically grounded framework designed to help people understand what is happening beneath recurring conflict, defensiveness, disconnection, mistrust, and painful relationship patterns.

Rather than offering surface-level communication tips, the programs help participants examine the internal reactions, past experiences, negative beliefs, competing motivations, and predictable patterns that influence how they respond to one another.

The goal is not simply to communicate more. It is to communicate with greater self-awareness, accuracy, empathy, and effectiveness.

What programs do you offer?

Beyond the Argument currently offers five specialized programs:

1. Marriage Crisis Program — For people whose partners are considering separation or divorce and who want to respond with greater clarity, steadiness, and meaningful change.
2. Betrayal, Trust & Reconciliation Program — For people trying to determine whether trust can be rebuilt after betrayal and what a healthy reconciliation process would require.
3. Beyond the Argument Couples Course — For couples who want to stop repeating negative patterns, understand each other more deeply, and build a healthier way of handling difficult conversations.
4. The Self-Aware Partner Program — For someone who wants to improve themselves and change their side of the relationship pattern, even when their partner is unwilling or not yet ready to participate.
5. Loving Someone Struggling With Addiction — For partners trying to love someone with an addiction without losing their own stability, identity, judgment, or well-being.

How do I know which program is right for me?

You do not have to make that decision alone. Some situations fit clearly into one program, while others overlap. When you contact us, you can briefly describe what is happening, what you have already tried, and what you most hope will change. We can then help you determine which program—or another kind of support—would be the best fit.

Do both partners have to participate?

No. Some programs are specifically designed for one partner to complete individually. A relationship involves two people, but one person can still become more self-aware, change unhelpful responses, establish healthier boundaries, communicate more effectively, and gain greater clarity about what is and is not within their control.

The Beyond the Argument Couples Course is designed for couples who are both willing to participate. In some programs, a partner may also have the option to become involved later when appropriate.

What if my partner refuses counseling or does not believe they are part of the problem?

You can still begin meaningful work. The Self-Aware Partner Program is designed specifically for people who do not want their own growth to remain dependent on their partner's willingness to participate.

The purpose is not to teach you how to manipulate or pressure your partner into changing. It is to help you understand your own reactions, recognize the patterns you may be contributing to, communicate with greater clarity, and make thoughtful decisions from a stronger and more grounded position.

Is this couples counseling or psychotherapy?

No. Beyond the Argument programs are educational and coaching-based services. They are not psychotherapy, couples counseling, mental-health treatment, crisis care, or a substitute for working with a licensed clinician when clinical treatment is needed.

The programs draw upon psychologically informed concepts and years of professional experience, but participation does not create a therapist-client relationship. The distinction between coaching and counseling will be clearly explained before enrollment.

Can I participate if I am already in counseling?

Yes. Many people may use an educational or coaching program alongside individual or couples therapy. The two forms of support serve different purposes and may complement each other.

If you are currently working with a therapist, you may wish to discuss the program with them. If your circumstances involve significant trauma symptoms, active abuse, addiction treatment needs, severe mental-health concerns, or an immediate crisis, specialized clinical care may need to take priority.

Are these programs appropriate when there is abuse or an immediate safety concern?

These programs are not designed to manage domestic violence, coercive control, threats, stalking, or an immediate safety crisis. Joint communication work may be inappropriate or unsafe in those circumstances.

If you are in immediate danger, contact 911 or the appropriate emergency service in your area. If you are experiencing domestic violence or are unsure whether your situation is abusive, seek confidential guidance from a qualified local professional or domestic-violence resource before participating.

Can you guarantee that my marriage will be saved or that trust will be restored?

No ethical program can guarantee another person's decisions, behavior, recovery, or willingness to remain in a relationship. Outcomes depend on many factors, including the circumstances, the choices of both partners, and how consistently the work is applied.

What the programs can provide is a structured process for understanding the situation more accurately, reducing responses that may be making it worse, developing greater self-awareness, and making more intentional choices about what comes next.

What is included in a program?

Specific features vary by program and level of support. Depending on the program selected, participation may include:

- A structured video curriculum
- Guided exercises and downloadable workbooks
- Personal assessments
- Specialized training for the problem you are facing
- Practical conversation tools and scripts
- Individual or couples coaching sessions
- Personalized review, feedback, or implementation support

During the initial conversation, we can explain which options apply to your situation.

How much do the programs cost?

Pricing depends on the program and the level of support included. Some people may need primarily educational course material, while others may benefit from a more personalized experience with coaching and additional guidance.

Rather than asking you to choose based only on a price or a short website description, we first want to understand what you are facing and help you evaluate the most appropriate option. There is no obligation to enroll simply because you contact us.

Why do I need to speak with someone before enrolling?

Relationship situations are complex, and the most expensive or intensive option is not automatically the right one. A brief conversation allows us to understand your primary concern, answer your questions, clarify what the programs can and cannot provide, and determine whether there is a strong fit.

It also gives you the opportunity to make an informed decision before investing your time, energy, and money.

What happens after I submit the contact form?

After you submit the form, you will receive instructions about the next step. Depending on your request, that may include scheduling an initial conversation or providing a little more information about your circumstances.

Submitting the form does not obligate you to purchase anything. It simply begins a conversation about whether and how Beyond the Argument may be able to help.

What should I include in my message?

A brief summary is enough. It may be helpful to include:

- The central problem you are facing
- Whether your partner is willing to participate
- What you have already tried
- Whether the situation feels urgent
- What you most hope will change
- The program you are considering, if you already have one in mind

Please do not use the contact form for emergencies or include highly sensitive medical, financial, or identifying information.

What if I am interested but not ready to enroll?

You are still welcome to reach out. The initial conversation can help you better understand your options and decide whether the timing is right. You will not be pressured to enroll simply because you asked a question or scheduled a call.

Still Have Questions?

You do not need to have everything figured out before contacting us. Tell us a little about what is happening, and we will help you consider the most appropriate next step.
