Frequently Asked Questions

Understanding Beyond the Argument

1. What is Beyond the Argument?

Beyond the Argument is a nine-week, educational coaching program that helps couples understand what is happening beneath their recurring conflicts. You’ll learn how past experiences, internal parts, emotional reactions, and distorted interpretations shape the way you see and respond to each other.

2. Is Beyond the Argument marriage counseling?

No. Beyond the Argument is a relationship education and coaching program—not psychotherapy, marriage counseling, or mental-health treatment. It does not diagnose or treat mental-health conditions. If you need clinical support, crisis care, or treatment for significant psychological concerns, please consult a qualified mental-health professional.

3. Who is this program designed for?

The program is designed for couples who care about their relationship but continue to experience misunderstanding, defensiveness, resentment, emotional distance, or repetitive arguments. It is especially helpful for people who want more than surface-level communication tips and are willing to look more deeply at their patterns.

4. What makes this different from other communication programs?

Many programs focus primarily on what to say or what not to say. Beyond the Argument also helps you understand why both of you interpret situations differently, why certain reactions feel so automatic, and what your protective parts are trying to accomplish. The goal is not simply to use better words—it is to see yourself, your partner, and the conflict more accurately.

5. What does “Most couples don’t have a love problem—they have a distortion problem” mean?

It means two people can genuinely love each other while misunderstanding one another’s motives, intentions, and behavior. When trust is low or old hurts are activated, each person’s mind may create a different explanation for what is happening. The program helps you recognize these distortions without dismissing real concerns or harmful behavior.

6. What will we learn during the nine weeks?

You will learn about self-bias, negativity bias, past hurt, negative self-beliefs, internal parts, protective reactions, relationship patterns, and areas of imbalance. You will also practice the Understand–Appreciate–Negotiate approach so that insight can become healthier communication and more intentional choices.

Participation and Program Fit

7. Do both partners need to participate?

The greatest benefit usually comes when both partners participate, but one person can still learn a great deal from the program. Changing how you understand and respond to conflict may influence the relationship’s overall pattern, even if your partner is not currently participating.

8. What if my partner is hesitant or unwilling?

Begin by explaining that the program is not about deciding who is wrong or trying to “fix” either partner. It is designed to help both people understand the system operating between them. If your partner remains unwilling, you may still enroll individually and apply the material to your own reactions, choices, and boundaries.

9. Is the program only for married couples?

No. Although many examples use the language of marriage, the principles can also benefit committed couples who are engaged, living together, or building a long-term partnership.

10. Do we need to be in crisis to benefit?

No. You do not need to wait until the relationship reaches a crisis. The program can help couples who feel stuck in serious conflict, but it can also help couples strengthen their relationship, prevent recurring problems from escalating, and develop a clearer understanding of one another.

11. Can this program save our relationship?

No program can guarantee a particular relationship outcome. Beyond the Argument provides a framework, practical tools, and opportunities for greater self-awareness, but results depend on factors such as participation, honesty, consistency, safety, and each partner’s willingness to make changes.

12. Is this program appropriate when there is abuse or a safety concern?

Beyond the Argument is not designed to address domestic violence, coercive control, threats, stalking, or situations in which either partner feels unsafe. Couples exercises may not be appropriate in those circumstances. If you are in immediate danger, call 911. Otherwise, contact a qualified local professional or domestic-violence resource for confidential guidance.

13. Can we participate while attending couples counseling?

Yes, provided your counselor believes the program is appropriate for your situation. Beyond the Argument can serve as an educational resource alongside counseling, but it should not replace treatment recommended by a qualified professional. You may wish to let your counselor know what you are learning so the services complement one another.

14. Is the program religious?

The program is psychologically grounded and designed to be useful to people from different backgrounds. Certain principles may also resonate with people of faith, but you do not need to hold a particular religious belief to participate.

Time, Access, and Learning Experience

15. How much time should we set aside each week?

Plan to spend approximately one to two hours each week watching the teaching material, completing the exercises, and discussing what you are learning. Some couples may choose to spend more time practicing the concepts between lessons.

16. Do we have to complete the program in exactly nine weeks?

No. The course is organized into nine learning modules, but you should move at a pace that allows you to understand and practice the material. Avoid rushing simply to finish. Lasting change usually comes from applying the concepts repeatedly, not just watching the videos.

17. How do we access the program?

After purchasing, you will receive an email with instructions for creating or accessing your account. You can then sign in online to view the lessons and included resources. If you do not see the email, check your spam, junk, or promotions folders.

18. How long will we have access to the course?

The Essentials and Guided packages include one year of access to the course materials and updates released during that year. The Fully Invested package includes ongoing access for as long as the program and platform remain available, along with access to future program updates.
